For some time now, everytime I open more than 2 tabs in IE the entire browser closes when i move the cursor to select a different tab to view, this same problem often happens when i am only viewing 2 tabs

Try reinstalling IE it might have a corrupted file somewhere.
I use Maxthion Browser. It uses tabs, and it's based on the IE engine and it's fully costumizable.

when you open internet explorer click TOOLS and then one up from the bottom of the little window that appears, there should be an option to change how the browser handles tabs. click the button and it will give you the chance to adjust how IE7 handles tabs. GOod luck !!
