What is 64 bit and 32 bit IE?

I just got Vista and I noticed that under programs I have a 32 bit IE and a 64 bit IE. What are they and what are the differences? Which one is the default? What happens if I use the other?

All the time, your computer is stored pieces of data in the memory, putting it there until it needs to refer to it. Each piece of information has an address.

The number of digits in the address determines the maximum number of addresses you can have - and so, the maximum amount of memory. Back in the old days, 8-bit, then 16, 32-bit and finally 64-bit.

With the introduction of 64-bit, backward compatibility for 32-bit was maintained, but support for earlier, shorter addressing was dropped.

So, 64-bit internet explorer can browse 32-bit technology, but not older technology. For this reason, a "32-bit" explorer is included, which can't browse 64-bit, but is more backward compatible.

The same principle is true of 64-bit windows - if you have, say, a printer driver that is built on 8-bit referencing, it will not work with 64-bit windows.

So, the answer is, 64-bit IE is for the future, but unlikely to be of any particular advantage now. If you encounter a problem with backwards compatibility, load up 32-bit IE and try again.
